How can the Chadwyck-Healey Literature Collections support your study?
The Chadwyck-Healey Literature Collections provide access to key texts for study and research, many of them rare and inaccessible in print form. Unlike other electronic texts that are available on the Internet, these texts are accurate reproductions of authoritative printed sources; full publication and pagination details of the original are given, allowing you to cite correctly from these texts as you would from a printed original.
All collections allow you to search for words or phrases within a particular work or across an entire genre or period, giving you a new way of analysing texts and developing comparisons between texts.
When you've found a text that interests you, use the Durable URL for this text link at the top of the screen to get a durable link that you can use to return to your text later.
Searching or browsing
To find quotations and to cross-search the entire collection, go to the Search page (follow the Search link on the home page of the literature collection you are using). From this screen, you can analyse the use of a particular word in a given literary period, or compare how male and female authors use a term. From your search results, you can link through to the full text of each relevant work, with your search term highlighted (look out for the Jump to first hit in text link under the title of the work).
See our Sample Searches for more information on how to find occurrences of a particular keyword or phrase, on the use of Boolean operators to extend the possibilities of keyword searching, and on special techniques for searching historical texts.
The Complete Contents screen (follow the Complete Contents link on the home page of the literature collection you are using) allows you to browse the entire contents of the database you are using. If you click on the title of a work that interests you, a satellite window will open showing the table of contents for the volume in question. Click on the icon to view the component sections of that volume and click on the title of any section to view the corresponding full text. When you are viewing full text, use the Durable URL for this text link at the top of the screen to get a durable link that you can use to return to your text without searching or browsing.
